It took 11 artists over a year to put together the 500,000-piece porcelain tile mosaic in the narrow porte cochere at Trump International Hotel & Tower Toronto. That gives visitors an idea right from the start about the level of artistry within this hotel. We say “narrow” because the green glass tower sits on a mere 15,000-sf footprint, creating a slender, shimmering profile over downtown Toronto.
Everything about this 261-room designer hotel is delicate and elegant, in fact. With an interior color palette revolving around “champagne and caviar,” with errant notes of plum, this is among the most romantic downtown business hotels we’ve ever seen.
We stopped in for a look a week after the hotel opened in early February. Presently, the hotel is conducting a professional photo shoot. These pix were taken with an iPhone during our site inspection.
Ivanka Trump played a significant role in the hotel’s look and feel, starting with the lobby. The walls consist of champagne-colored Asian and Italian Jada onyx slabs. The dark trim is “Negro Absoluto” granite, an inky caviar-hued black material without the typical grain associated with granite. Hanging on the wall behind the short lobby desk, a 13,000-pound Swarovski crystal sculpture imported from the Czech Republic is designed like a cherry blossom.
Meanwhile, just off the lobby, the 55-pax Martini Bar is popular for an intimate buyout. The bar top is African ebony and there’s a head-turning black crystal chandelier poised delicately over a 12-pax dining room table.
More black crystal chandeliers and sconces illuminate the bright prefunction space and meeting rooms. The intricate ceilings are stunners with thick lattice and dentil crown mouldings, which you might think isn’t a huge deal until you see them.
“I’ve already had one planner in here who said, ‘John, you had me at the ceiling,’” says John Bullock, director of sales/marketing.
Divisible by three, the ballroom seats 200 for dinner surrounded by six large windows, so there’s plenty of natural light swimming throughout the entire room. The space is long and narrow with six drop-down screens extending the length of the ceiling. Total meeting space is 12,000 sf.
“This way, you can have a packed house and no one is very far from the video screens,” says Bullock.
Upon entering the main restaurant, you immediately become enamored with the towering 30-foot ceiling, a big beautiful Swarovski sculpture of cherry blossoms in full bloom, and a tall divider constructed from double glass panes sandwiching Italian lace. Dining capacity is 90 pax in the dining room; 40 in the bar.
A mezzanine wine room seats 35 with a full window overlooking Toronto’s skyline. There’s also a fun wine wall with 550 labels including a good looking 1995 Dunn Vineyards’ Howell Mountain Cabernet.
Bullock says Trump International Toronto employs one of three master sommeliers in Canada.
SPA + GUESTROOMS
A pretty quartz crystal desk welcomes attendees to the 18,000-sf Quartz Crystal Spa. An infinity saltwater pool and spa café is scheduled to open in April. Presently there are 14 massage rooms revolving around the spa salon with high-tech foot baths.
We were completely sold on the Trump International Toronto when we arrived at the 560-sf residential-style guestrooms. At the entrance of each, there’s an elegant marble minibar and ceiling dome moulding adornment. Donald Trump insists that the bed at any of his hotels is never visible from the entrance, so you round a corner to see the bed, which is framed with the same black marble found in the lobby and public spaces. A long plum-hued photo of cherry blossoms extends across the headboard, and the side tables have pull-out extensions to hold electronics.
The Donald also insists that in-room desks always face a window. So, facing each window, a fully wired silver French reproduction desk anchors the refined rooms. Bullock says the hotel has dedicated fiber optic cable for fast WiFi and the IP televisions.
The special details continue in the closets with four different types of clothes/coat hangers. And we absolutely love the all-black vanities in the bright white bathrooms. The vanities are styled after old-fashioned steamer trunks, and the black marble vanity tops have been slightly etched with acid in a process known as “noir-blanche” to create a leather-like texture.
Of the 261 accommodations, 120 are extra spacious suites with parlor rooms, cool chrome nesting tables and in-wall fireplaces. When new photography becomes available, we’ll share it with you.
Better yet, Bullock says, “We want to show off this property to meeting planners because nothing really exists like it in this market. I think any planner will feel the same passion about the Trump Hotel Toronto as we do once they’ve experienced it.”
